Artificial grass price in Cape Town, per square metre installed
Compare the installed rate, not the roll price. A roll quoted at R99 per square metre still needs a base, a membrane, joins and infill, and those carry most of the labour.
| Pile height | Installed | Supply only | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25mm | R159/m² | R89/m² | Pets, high traffic, putting fringes |
| 30mm | R199/m² | R119/m² | Family lawns, the usual choice |
| 40mm | R249/m² | R154/m² | Show lawns, low traffic, deep look |
Cheap artificial grass in Cape Town is the 25mm pile at R159 per square metre installed. The base, the infill and the labour are the same as on the longer piles; only the yarn changes.
Artificial grass installation cost for a typical Cape Town garden
Work from the area. Put the square metres in below and pick a pile height for the installed figure, or read the worked examples underneath at the 30mm rate, which is what most households choose.
Supply, compacted base, silica infill, joins and labour are all inside that figure. Excavation, removal of an old lawn and difficult access are quoted on the site visit.

Astro turf prices, and why they are the same prices
Astro turf prices and artificial grass prices describe one product. Astro turf is a brand name that became a generic term, so a quote for astro turf in Cape Town lands in the same R159 to R249 per square metre band above. The only real difference is pile: astro turf usually means the short sports-style pile, which is our 25mm at R159.
What moves the price up
- Excavation. Deep soil removal adds labour and cartage.
- Access. A garden reached only through the house is slower to load.
- Shape. Curves and islands waste more off the roll than rectangles.
- Old surface. Concrete that holds water needs drainage cut before turf goes down.
Nothing is added after the quote is signed. The site visit exists to find these four things before a number is given.

Price questions
What is the average price of artificial grass in Cape Town?
The average installed price in Cape Town is R199 per square metre. The range runs R159 to R249 depending on pile height. Supply-only grass costs less and excludes the base, which is where most of the labour sits.
Why is artificial grass quoted per square metre?
Grass is manufactured and sold by the square metre, and the base underneath is priced the same way. Rolls come 4 metres wide, so a garden that divides cleanly into 4-metre widths wastes less and costs less per metre.
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes. Jobs under 20 square metres carry a minimum charge because the crew, the plate compactor and the delivery cost the same on a small garden as a large one.
Does the price include removing the old lawn?
No. Removal is quoted separately because the volume of soil taken out changes with the garden. The site visit settles it before anything is booked.
